Informational Interviews

45 Step 7: Follow-up after the interview

The day after the interview it is appropriate to send an email/LinkedIn message thanking the person you interviewed for their time. However, consider mailing a hand-written thank you note. It is a nice touch that will set you apart from others. I don’t know anyone who has even been anything other than pleased to receive a hand-written note of gratitude.

Also, be sure to link with them on LinkedIn if you haven’t already and make an effort to engage with them on LinkedIn regularly by liking their posts and commenting as appropriate. Reach out through LinkedIn messaging or email for advice on school, internships, and career opportunities every few months.

Subject: Thank You

Dear Mr. Jones,

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to meet with me yesterday to discuss your position as Marketing Manager with ABC Company.

I enjoyed our conversation, and it was interesting to learn more about you and the company culture at XYZ. I am now more certain than ever that I have made the right career choice.

It sounds like XYZ company is a great place to work, I hope you will keep me in mind as future internship opportunities become available that you think you would be a good fit for me.

Thank you,

Sam Jones
